What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state-issued identification card that complies with the federal security standards set by the REAL ID Act of 2005. You can identify a REAL ID by the gold or black star printed on the front of the card, usually in the upper-right corner.

Since May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers aged 18 and older must present a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification to board domestic commercial flights, enter federal buildings that require ID, and access secure federal facilities such as nuclear power plants.

REAL ID vs. Standard Driver’s License

A REAL ID functions exactly like a standard driver’s license for everyday use — it allows you to drive, serves as a form of identification, and can be used for age verification. The difference is that a REAL ID also meets federal security requirements, while a standard license does not.

A standard driver’s license without the REAL ID star is no longer accepted for domestic air travel or entry to federal buildings as of May 7, 2025.

What Documents Do You Need to Get a REAL ID?

To obtain a REAL ID, you must visit your state’s DMV in person and present:

Proof of identity and date of birth: A certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Certificate of Naturalization
Proof of Social Security number: Your Social Security card, W-2, or SSA-1099
Two proofs of residency: Utility bills, bank statements, mortgage documents, or lease agreements with your current address

If your name has changed since your birth certificate was issued, you will also need legal documentation of the name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.

How Much Does a REAL ID Cost?

The cost varies by state, typically between $10 and $40. Some states charge the same fee as a standard license renewal, while others add a small surcharge for the REAL ID upgrade. Check your state DMV’s website for exact pricing.

Alternatives to a REAL ID

If you do not have a REAL ID, the following forms of identification are still accepted for domestic flights and federal building access:

Valid U.S. passport or passport card
U.S. military ID
Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)
DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)

Gather your documents — birth certificate, Social Security card, and two proofs of residency.
