Idaho Marriage Certificate Overview

Learn how to order Idaho marriage certificate from the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare - Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics (DHW-BVR). The current processing time is 2 to 4 weeks. The state fee is $16.00 per marriage certificate. Authorized individuals include the certificate holder, immediate family members, and authorized third parties.

Where to Get an Idaho Marriage Certificate

Idaho marriage certificate is available from the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, which maintains statewide marriage records from 1947 to the present. Certified copies can be ordered online, by mail, or in person at the bureau's office in Boise. The fee is $16 for a certified copy. Visit the Idaho Vital Records website for ordering instructions.

You can also contact the County Recorder in the county where the marriage license was issued. Idaho has 44 counties, and each county recorder maintains local marriage records. For marriages before 1947, the county recorder is the only source for certified copies.

For a secure, guided experience, order your Idaho marriage certificate online through VRO with document verification and order tracking.

Is an Idaho Marriage Certificate Issued by the State or County?

Idaho uses a dual-level system. The County Recorder is the original recording authority — after the ceremony, the officiant files the marriage certificate with the county recorder in the county that issued the license. The county then forwards a copy to the state Bureau of Vital Records.

Certified copies from either source are valid for legal purposes. The state bureau has records from 1947 onward, while county recorders may have older records. The state fee is $16 per copy, and county fees vary by jurisdiction. County offices often provide faster in-person service.

Idaho Marriage License Requirements and Age Rules

Idaho has notable marriage requirements that affect when and how your marriage certificate is issued. Idaho requires no waiting period between obtaining a marriage license and the ceremony, and licenses do not expire. However, Idaho recently updated its minimum marriage age laws — as of 2020, both parties must be at least 16 years old, with parental consent and a court order required for those under 18.

Idaho does not require blood tests or premarital counseling. The state recognizes marriages performed by judges, magistrates, ministers, and other authorized officiants. The officiant must return the completed marriage certificate to the county recorder within 30 days of the ceremony.

Idaho is also one of the few states that recognized common-law marriage until January 1, 1996. Common-law marriages established before that date are still recognized, and certified copies of those marriage records can be obtained through the county where the couple resided.
